Woman To Plead Guilty To Smuggling Drugs Into County Jail

May 21, 2019

SCRANTON — A former contract employee with the Lackawanna County prison agreed to plead guilty to conspiring with others to smuggle drugs and tobacco into the facility.

Federal prosecutors charged Brenda Cruise, age and address not listed, in February with conspiring with several other people to smuggle tobacco, marijuana, synthetic marijuana and suboxone into the prison from February 2018 to December 2018.

A plea agreement filed today says Cruise agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to provide a prohibited object.

Cruise is the fourth person charged with smuggling items into the prison. Jerry DeFazio, Deanna Tallo and Thomas Coss previously pleaded guilty to federal charges.

DeFazio was sentenced in April to 14 months in federal prison. Tallo’s sentencing is set for May 30,while Coss’ sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 1. It was not clear Tuesday if Cruise’s case is related to the other cases.
