Nazareth 22, Roanoke 11
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Ronnie Davis scored six goals as Nazareth set a Division III scoring record in winning the Division III championship Sunday with a 22-11 victory over Roanoke.
Davis started a 6-0 first-half run late in the first period with two goals, giving Nazareth a 5-2 lead after the first quarter. The Rochester, N.Y., school, which ended Hobart’s 12-year reign with a 13-12 overtime victory last week, built the margin to 8-2 early in the second.
But the Maroons (12-5) rallied to cut the margin to 8-4 at halftime, then twice drew within two goals in the third period.
A goal by Davis 10 minutes into the third period, followed by two from Cam Bomberry within minutes, gave Nazareth a 14-9 lead going into the last period.
Jeremy Hollenbeck scored all three of his goals for Nazareth in the last quarter.
Don Treacy and Mark DiBenedetto both scored three goals for Roanoke and Colin McGahren had two.
Nazareth’s 22 goals broke the record of 18 by Hobart in 1988 and 1990. The 33 goals by the two teams broke the Division III championship record of 27 in the Hobart-Ohio Wesleyan game in 1988.
