Woman charged with felony child abuse in Portage

December 19, 2018

A 29-year-old Portage woman is accused of abusing a 7-year-old boy.

Jackie N. Shonk faces felony intentional physical abuse of a child, which carries a maximum prison sentence of six years and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

According to the criminal complaint, the child told a Portage police detective that Shonk had at one time slapped him next to a table, resulting in a bloody nose and black eye. The alleged incident was witnessed by a second child, whom the detective had already interviewed.

The second child told the detective Shonk hit the boy in the nose and head after the boy refused to drink vinegar, the complaint states. The strike resulted in a bloody nose and black eye and the second child had then provided an ice pack for the victim.

Shonk told the detective she hit the boy on Nov. 25 once in the face, resulting in the bloody nose and black eye, according to the complaint.

Online court records show Shonk is not yet scheduled to appear in Columbia County Circuit Court. Police filed the complaint Dec. 12.
