CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ North Carolina’s Charlotte Smith scored 18 points and teammate Tonya Sampson added 14 to lead No. 21 North Carolina to a 59-56 victory over 17th- ranked Clemson in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Saturday.

North Carolina improved to 11-2 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, while Clemson fell to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Clemson took the lead with 11:10 left in the game as Bryan scored a layup and was fouled. Bryan converted on the free throw making the score 42-40.

But North Carolina scored 10 unanswered points and gained a 50-42 lead with 5:28 left.

But the Lady Tigers went on a scoring run and outscored North Carolina 14-7 to pull within 57-56 with 1:01 left.

Smith was fouled and hit both ends of the one-and-one with 5.2 seconds remaining giving North Carolina a 59-56 advantage.

Clemson’s desperation 3-point shot by Dana Puckett hit the left side of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Clemson was led by Rema Miller with 17 points and Shandy Bryan with 13. Rhonda Jackson finished the game with a career-high 16 rebounds.
