Cloud-Enabled Technologies and Micro-Vertical Depth Differentiating Vendors, Nucleus Research Value Matrix Finds

September 18, 2018

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 18, 2018--The latest Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Technology Value Matrix from Nucleus Research shows two distinct directions among leading vendors. The larger, enterprise-focused vendors continue to prioritize functionality depth and breadth, while smaller, more agile vendors focused on small- and medium-sized businesses seek to differentiate with better usability and narrower industry-specific expertise.

The common thread among leaders is an understanding of how artificial intelligence, (AI) and machine learning can enhance ERP offerings. Leaders are benefiting from cloud expansion, accelerating customer adoption of their latest technologies and enabling them to deploy new capabilities to their platforms.

Leaders in this year’s ERP Value Matrix include: Acumatica, Deltek, Infor CloudSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Oracle NetSuite, Oracle ERP Cloud, SAP S/4HANA and SYSPRO.

“Remaining a lynchpin for many businesses, ERP continues to evolve while supporting day-to-day operations and the tracking of critical enterprise data. Vendors are investing in a suite of technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), natural language processing and bots that add value by bringing deep integration capabilities,” said Seth Lippincott, principal analyst at Nucleus Research.

Nucleus has identified a dichotomy in the form of the ERP Maturity Gap, characterized by the difference between vendor marketing, which focuses on more futuristic cutting-edge technologies, and the needs of customers looking to maintain basic operational integrity. Vendors are challenged to create coherent marketing messages and strategic roadmaps that demonstrate the future value delivered by new solutions and technologies, but without leaving behind legacy customers that are experiencing a pain point, like new regulation compliance or laborious month-end financial close, which that can’t be solved by AI or ML.

“A small number of vendors have proven capable of delivering solutions flexible enough to enable customers and partners to build custom capabilities in a cost-effective manner. Vertical offerings tailored to specific customer needs have been at the center of many vendor value propositions and as a result, customers operating in niche micro-verticals are better positioned to determine if an ERP vendor can serve their needs as they search through available offerings,” Lippincott continued.

Nucleus evaluates ERP market vendors based on their product usability and functionality and the value that customers realize from the capabilities of the product. As a snapshot of the ERP landscape, this research is intended to help inform consumers about how well vendors are delivering value to customers and what prospects can expect moving forward based on the investments vendors are making today.
