HARVEY WEINSTEIN PLEADS NOT GUILTY
NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein’s attorney says that his defense is set to “begin our fight” in the courtroom after he pleaded not guilty to rape and criminal sex act charges in New York. Weinstein appeared before a judge in Manhattan Tuesday after a grand jury charged him last week with raping a woman in a hotel room and forcing another to perform oral sex in his office. Ben Brafman called the case against Weinstein “eminently defensible” based on what they have learned about the evidence. He says that as bad as the crime of rape is, it’s equally reprehensible to be falsely accused. His bail was previously set at $1 million, allowing him to remain free while he awaits trial. He is scheduled to return to court Sept. 20. Brafman says Weinstein is “holding up reasonably well.”

WOODY ALLEN SAYS HE’S DOWN WITH THE #METOO MOVEMENT
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Should Woody Allen be the poster boy for the #MeToo movement? He says he should — but not for reasons his critics feel he should be. For decades, Allen has denied he molested his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. And when it comes to dealing with women, Allen says he’s been a model citizen. He tells an interview in Argentina he’s done movies for a half century and worked with hundreds of actresses — and not one ever accused him of “any kind of impropriety at all.” Allen says he’s in favor of exposing sexual harassment, even if it means “innocent ones get swept up.” Allen also says it irks him to be lumped in with the likes of Harvey Weinstein and others who face multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. He says he was only accused once, and that was by his ex-wife in a child custody case — and those allegations didn’t result in charges being filed.
DONALD TRUMP - DEFAMATION LAWSUIT
NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for President Donald Trump have told a New York judge that a former “Apprentice” contestant should not be able to obtain information from his campaign on any discussions of other women who have also accused him of sexual misconduct. Tuesday’s court date was the first since a Manhattan judge turned down Trump’s bid to dismiss Summer Zervos’ defamation lawsuit or postpone it until after his presidency. His lawyers are appealing the decision. Zervos appeared in 2006 on Trump’s former reality show, “The Apprentice.” She says he subjected her to unwanted kissing and groping when she sought career advice in 2007. She accuses him of defaming her by calling her a liar after she came forward with her claims in 2016. Trump denies her allegations.
KATHY GRIFFIN - AWARD
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Kathy Griffin is getting a special honor today in West Hollywood. She will be acknowledged for raising more than $5 million for gay rights causes. The city of West Hollywood will give Griffin its Rainbow Key Award at an annual ceremony to recognize those who’ve made contributions to the LGBTQ community. Griffin’s trying to forge a comeback after the uproar this time last year by her posing for a photo shoot while holding a fake severed Donald Trump head. Griffin apologized, but lost a slew of jobs and got death threats before later retracting her apology.
MEEK MILL CASE
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Meek Mill’s lawyers are seeking help from the Supremes. Not the singing group, but the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. They’re asking the state’s highest tribunal to remove the judge from his long-running criminal case. Attorneys for the rapper say Genece Brinkley has treated Mill unfairly and has engaged in unprofessional conduct. Mill has been fighting to get his 2008 convictions on drug and gun charges thrown out because of questions about the credibility of the arresting officer.
ELVIS MOVIE GUITAR SHUNNED AT AUCTION
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — You don’t have to be a math whiz to figure the owner of a guitar featured in the Elvis Presley movie “Girls, Girls, Girls” will do better in a private sale than it did at auction. That’s because the auction didn’t fetch a single bid. Now, the guitar will be sold off privately. The owner set the initial bid for the instrument at $32,000 — apparently too rich for bidders’ blood.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP CLIPS EAGLES’ APPEARANCE
WASHINGTON (AP) — White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says it was the Philadelphia Eagles, not President Donald Trump, “who changed their commitment at the last minute” to a White House Super Bowl celebration. Trump had been prepared to host the Eagles Tuesday, but announced Monday he was canceling the event. Earlier, the White House said that the team notified the White House last week that 81 people, including players, coaches and managers would be attending. But late Friday, the team tried to reschedule, proposing a time when Trump would be overseas. In the end, Sanders says the Eagles offered to send “only a tiny handful of representatives” to the event, “while making clear that the great majority of players would not attend.”
PHILADELPHIA MAYOR: TRUMP IS NO PATRIOT
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The mayor of Philadelphia says President Donald Trump is no true patriot. Jim Kenney says Trump is “a fragile egomaniac obsessed with crowd size and afraid of the embarrassment of throwing a party to which no one wants to attend.” Trump called off today’s scheduled meet-and-greet with members of the Super Bowl-winning Eagles, noting that few players planned to attend. Some Eagles had expressed misgivings about attending the event. But others planned to go. In past years, a number of players have skipped the Rose Garden ceremony. But the issue gained more attention this year after Trump repeatedly criticized NFL players for taking a knee for the national anthem to protest police brutality or other racial inequalities in this country.
MELANIA TRUMP REAPPEARS AFTER 3-WEEK ABSENCE
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Trump’s Twitter trolls will have to slow their roll — at least when it comes to the first lady. After more than three weeks out of public view, Melania Trump has re-emerged. She attended a White House event yesterday for military families, ending wild online speculation that she was somehow incapacitated or had otherwise vanished. The event the Trumps attended was closed to the media. One attendee says the president joked about “all the speculation” about Melania leaving — but said she was doing fine.
MISS AMERICA-NO MORE SWIMSUIT
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The Miss America Organization is dropping the swimsuit competition from its nationally televised broadcast, saying it will no longer judge contestants on their appearance. Gretchen Carlson, a former Miss America who is head of the organization’s board of trustees, made the announcement Tuesday on “Good Morning America.” She also says the group will make changes to the evening wear portion of the competition, adding it will not judge women on their chosen attire. The changes follow an email scandal in December in which former leaders denigrated the intelligence and personal lives of former Miss Americas. That led to a shakeup at the top, and the group’s top three leadership posts are now held by women. The changes will start with this year’s broadcast on Sept. 9.
