BOSTON (AP) — A former Merrimack College engineering professor who pleaded guilty to using a college-owned laptop to access child pornography has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Gary Spring, of Beverly, will remain free on $30,000 bound until he starts his federal prison term in July. The Salem News (http://bit.ly/1RFZVMV ) reports that following his release, Spring will be on five years of supervised release and will be required to perform 400 hours of community service.

The 62-year-old Spring pleaded guilty in September to having more than 300 images of child pornography on the computer owned by the North Andover school.

Spring's attorney said his client "is now fully aware of the gravity of his conduct and the terrible consequences for the victims of it."

The Catholic school fired him.
