Fire 34, Galaxy 27
DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) _ Matthew Hickl ran back a blocked field goal attempt 78 yards with 1:29 left in the game Saturday as the Rhein Fire defeated the Frankfurt Galaxy 34-27 in NFL Europe.
Hickl picked up Chris Akins’ block of a 22-yard attempt by the Galaxy’s Ralf Kleinmann to decide a battle between the two German rivals that drew 43,000 _ the biggest crowd in Duesseldorf history.
It was also the largest crowd at Rhein Stadium since a 1988 European Championships soccer match.
The Galaxy led 27-16 as Corey Thomas caught two touchdown passes, a 25-yarder from Pat Barnes and a 40-yarder from Ted White that came on a third-and-25 situation.
The Fire rallied as Danny Wuerffel connected with Jeff Ogden for a 30-yard scoring pass during the final minute of the third quarter. Wuerffel then threw to German national Kai Lyck for the two-point conversion that cut the Galaxy lead to 27-24.
Then Danny Knight kicked a 45-yard field goal for the Fire, tying the game at 27-27 with 4:05 to play.
The win moved Rhein to 2-1 in the developmental league and dropped Frankfurt, the defending champions, to 1-2.
