MU roundup: Charlotte wins tennis match at Marshall

BARBOURSVILLE — Charlotte downed Marshall University, 5-2, in a Sunday matchup of Conference USA women’s tennis teams inside the Huntington Tennis Club.

Charlotte picked up its first point with victories in two doubles matches.

Victoria Walter and Madi Ballow scored for Marshall in singles. Walter defeated Sasha Lee, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Ballow beat Emma Scott, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2.

Marshall’s next match is 4 p.m. Friday at home against Louisville.

Track and field

HUNTINGTON — Marshall University track and field athletes completed competition Saturday at the Akron Invitational and the Carolina Challenge.

MaryAnn Adebayo placed second in the Blue Division of the women’s shot put at Akron with a best toss of 40-feet, 11.5 inches. Elena Marchand tied for third place in the Gold Division women’s discus throw at 151-4.

Adebayo also finished fourth in the Blue Division weight throw (54-4.5). Marchand was the third-place finisher in the Gold Division shot put (47-5.25).

Reneese Batson took fourth place in the Gold Division weight throw (62-8.75) and Madelyn Garrison was fourth in the Blue Division 3,000-meter run (10:48.21).

Coy Smith from the Marshall men’s cross country team was fourth in the Blue Division 3,000-meter run (9:03.36) and Nickolas Schmidt was fourth in the Gold Division 3,000 with a tie of 8:42.12.

In the women’s pole vault at the Carolina Challege in Columbia, South Carolina, Macie Majoy and Lauren Zaglifa tied for fourth place (12-1.5).

The Thundering Herd’s next meet is Friday-Saturday, the Marshall Invitational inside the Chris Cline Indoor Facility.
