Chemical tank blows top off, igniting fire in Delaware
NEWPORT, Del. (AP) — Authorities say a chemical tank caught fire at an industrial park where a decade-ago fire sent several first responders to the hospital.
The News Journal reports that fire departments from across New Castle County responded to a commercial structure fire Tuesday evening. Minquas Fire Company Chief Joseph Dierolf says a separating chemical tank blew its top off, catching fire.
Before sending crews in, Dierolf asked employees if there were any chemicals of which to be aware. Firefighters responding to the blaze more than 10 years ago were hospitalized for chemical exposure.
Dierolf says employees instructed the firefighters that water wouldn’t react with the chemicals.
More than 50 firefighters from seven companies got the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
No injuries were reported.
