Rangers 3, Bruins 2
BOSTON (AP) _ Alexei Kovalev scored a pair of goals Saturday as the New York Rangers broke a seven game losing streak and beat the Boston Bruins, 3-2.
Kovalev, who was questionable with a pulled thigh muscle, tied the score at 1-1 with his seventh goal of the season from Petr Nedved at 12:33 of the first period.
Then he took a pass from the newly acquired Pat Verbeek and rifled his eighth score past Boston goalie Blaine Lacher from high in the slot at 14:44 of the second to make it 3-1.
It was an all-Russian afternoon for the Rangers as Sergei Nemchinov scored the second Ranger goal unassisted 7 seconds into the second period to make it 2-1 for the struggling Stanley Cup champions.
Teddy Donato got the first goal for Boston on the power play at 2:24 when his drive from the blue line went through a screen to beat Ranger goalie Glenn Healy.
Adam Oates got the second Bruins score with a spectacular shorthanded dash from his own zone to slip the puck under Healy while teammate Dave Reid clogged up the crease. That cut it to 3-2 less than two minutes after Kovalev had scored but the game was scoreless from then on.
The Bruins had 31 chances at Healy, the rarely used backup to the Rangers’ starter, Mike Richter.
Lacher turned back 24 of 27 New York shots, including a pad save at the end on Mark Messier’s breakaway early in the second period.
