Brother of Boy George Convicted of Killing Wife
ST. ALBANS, England (AP) _ A court on Thursday sentenced the brother of pop star Boy George to indefinite detention in a mental hospital for stabbing his wife to death.
Gerald O’Dowd, 32, one of the pop star’s three brothers, killed his wife, Gillian, on Sept. 3 at their home near St. Alban’s, 22 miles northwest of London.
Three psychiatrists testified that he was a paranoid schizophrenic suffering from delusions and had probably been severely mentally ill for six years.
``This unfortunate young woman was almost certainly resting, if not actually asleep in her bed, when the defendant stabbed her in the chest,″ said prosecutor Graham Parkins.
Friends testified that Mrs. O’Dowd, also 32, was terrified of her husband, who had made previous death threats.
After stabbing her, O’Dowd, a bricklayer and former boxer, drove to a police station, handed over a knife wrapped in a towel, and said, ``I think I have killed my wife.″
O’Dowd pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility.
Boy George, 34, was not in court. O’Dowd was led away without glancing at his mother, Dinah, and another brother, David.
