Phila. Mobster Borgesi Sentenced

December 7, 2001

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Philadelphia mob consigliere George Borgesi was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in prison for racketeering.

Borgesi, the No. 3 man in the crime family headed by Joseph ``Skinny Joey″ Merlino, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $17,500 fine.

U.S. District Judge Herbert Hutton gave Borgesi the same amount of jail time as Merlino, who was sentenced Monday.

Borgesi, 38, of Cherry Hill, N.J., was one of seven defendants in a four-month trial that ended in July with convictions for racketeering, extortion, illegal gambling, unlawful collection of debts and other offenses.

The defendants were acquitted of the most serious charges of murder, attempted murder and drug trafficking.
