Aiken man charged in child neglect case from February
An Aiken man was charged Tuesday in connection with an incident involving three juveniles in February.
David Mitchell Trakas, 37, of Greenwich Drive, is charged with three counts of unlawful neglect of a child, according to jail records.
On Feb. 21, an Aiken Public Safety officer spoke with a man who claimed his three grandchildren had been kicked out of their home the night before and were forced to stay with a neighbor, according to the report.
The oldest of the three children called the grandfather on Feb. 20 claiming the suspect began a verbal argument with her, used profanity and threatened to “beat her with a belt,” the report states.
She said the situation then escalated and the suspect pushed her to the bed, striking her with his belt, according to the report.
The two other young children were also present during the incident, the report states.
The suspect then forced the juveniles to leave the house and to not come back until they learned to respect him, according to the report.
The three kids then walked to a neighbor’s house to stay for the night. Their grandfather picked them up in the morning and took them to his residence, police reported.
Following an investigation, Trakas was arrested Tuesday and taken to the Aiken County detention center, where he was still being held Wednesday afternoon.
