Police block off a portion of Andover Street in Lowell Monday afternoon where a single-vehicle crash led to the driver being flown by MedFlight to a Boston hospital.

LOWELL -- A man was flown by MedFlight helicopter to a Boston hospital with serious injuries after the van he was driving crashed into a tree on Andover Street at around 1 p.m. Monday.

Lowell firefighters used hydraulic tools to free the unidentified man who was pinned inside, according to Lowell Fire Chief Jeffrey Winward.

He was taken from the scene to the Cawley Stadium parking lot by ambulance, and from Cawley was flown to Boston.

The man was the sole occupant in the vehicle, Winward said.
