Oil Workers’ Plane Missing in Peru
LIMA, Peru (AP) _ An air force charter flight carrying workers for the American oil company Occidental Petroleum was reported missing early Wednesday in Peru’s northern jungle, authorities said.
The Boeing 737 took off from the jungle city of Iquitos, 600 miles northeast of Lima, at 8:45 p.m. carrying 83 people, including six crew members, to the oil camp of Andoas, said a spokesman for Iquitos airport who requested anonymity because it was a military plane.
The flight was to have taken 38 minutes but never arrived in Andoas, which is 225 miles west of Iquitos near Ecuador’s border.
``We have no idea what happened to the plane,″ he said.
The area is remote and covered by dense Amazon jungle. There was no information on whether foreigners were on board, said Dr. Dante Aliaga, medical chief at the Iquitos airport.
An air force plane will be sent to search for the plane in the morning, he said.
