Earthquake Jolts Northern Japan

October 27, 1997

TOKYO (AP) _ A strong earthquake jolted northern Japan early Monday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Central Meteorological Agency said the earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 struck at 4:07 a.m. (1907 GMT Sunday) in southern Akita Prefecture (state), about 280 miles north of Tokyo.

A 5 magnitude earthquake can cause damage to homes if it occurs in a residential area. But Monday’s quake left little damage because it was centered at a depth of about 74 miles.
