Steelers Sign Offensive Lineman
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) _ The Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday placed wide receiver-kick returner Henry Bailey on the injured reserve list for the second season in a row and signed free agent guard Emerson Martin.
Bailey broke an ankle in two places in Saturday’s exhibition game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will miss the season. He also sat out the 1997 season after breaking a leg in an exhibition game.
The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Martin, from Hampton University, is in his third Steelers training camp after being cut in 1996 and 1997. He also spent time on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad in 1994.
With rookie lineman Chris Conrad bothered by a hyperextended elbow and guard Will Wolford out since camp began with a concussion and neck pain, coach Bill Cowher said the Steelers were becoming thin on the offensive line.
