Texas A&M 57, Texas Tech 46
DALLAS (AP) _ Freddie Ricks scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half and Texas A&M secured a spot in the Southwest Conference tournament quarterfinals Thursday night with a 57-46 victory over Texas Tech.
The Aggies, 8-20, will play No. 5-ranked Arkansas, 28-3, at 7 p.m. on Friday in the tournament quarterfinals. Texas Tech finished the season with an 8-23 record.
The Aggies built a 45-33 lead with 5:33 to go on a 9-0 run, which included two baskets by Ricks.
Then Ricks scored the last four points of the game on free throws.
The Aggies built a 9-point lead at 21-12 but the Red Raiders charged back to tie it at 23 with 24 seconds left in the first half on a layup by Derek Butts.
The Aggies didn’t make a point in the last 6:02 of the first half.
Both teams had trouble finding the range in the first half with the Aggies shooting 38 percent from the field and Texas Tech 39 percent.
Steve Miles led the Raiders with 14 points and Butts added 12 points.
Shedrick Anderson scored 14 points for the Aggies and Brooks Thompson added 12.
Texas A&M played the game after a published report which said coach Kermit Davis would be fired next week because of NCAA rules violations. Davis denied he knew anything about it.
