Purdue 78, Cent. Michigan 76

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) _ Brandon Brantley’s layup with four seconds left gave Purdue a 78-76 victory over Central Michigan on Wednesday night as the Boilermakers avoided losing a game they led by 11 with two minutes left.

The Boilermakers (1-1) took a 74-63 lead with 2:07 left when Brad Miller made a pair of free throws. But the Chippewas (1-1) closed to 74-73 as Ryan Jansen hit a 3-pointer with 1:59 left and Thomas Kilgore made a 3-pointer and a pair of baskets in the final 1:07.

Chad Austin made a pair of free throws for Purdue, but Jansen hit another 3-pointer with 15 seconds left as the Chippewas, which had ended a 19-game losing streak with their opening-game victory, tied it up. But Brantley’s layup gave Purdue the win.

Justin Jennings led five Boilermakers in double figures with 14 points. Brantley had 13 points, Roy Hairston scored 12, Porter Roberts scored 11 and Austin had 10.

Charles Macon scored 26 points for Central, Kilgore had 16 and Jansen 12.

The game was even throughout most of the first half before Purdue used a 6-0 run to open a 34-28 halftime lead. The Boilermakers led by as much as 68-55 in the second half, hitting their free throws in the final five minutes to maintain their lead before Central finally made its run.
