Registered sex offender in Lehi charged after police reportedly discover downloaded child porn
On May 1, after a month of investigation, officers arrested 37-year-old Joshua Walker on two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony. Walker is also charged with one count of obstruction of justice, a Class A misdemeanor.
At the end of March, investigators were operating software used to investigate child pornography being shared via peer-to-peer networks on the Internet, the probable cause statement says. The monitoring software identified the IP address of a computer that appeared to be used to share files of child pornography via the BitTorrent peer-to-peer network and received a file from the suspected computer.
Investigators chose files at random and discovered at least three pictures of nude, prepubescent girls, according to the probable cause statement. Investigators sent a subpoena to Comcast Cable Inc., the company the IP address was registered to, and requested subscriber information for the IP address of the suspect computer. The subscriber information was that of Walker, who lives in Lehi.
Walker is a registered sex offender and his address on the registry is up to date, the probable cause statement says. Investigators served a warrant to Walker’s Lehi home on April 30 and confiscated multiple electronics and computers. Walker was not home at the time, according to the probable cause statement, but responded to a phone call and told officers he would come home.
According to the probable cause statement, Walker did not return to his home and avoided capture throughout the day, and was eventually taken into custody on Wednesday, May 1.
The probable cause statement says officers asked Walker if he brought his phone, and that Walker told officers he did not. The arresting officer called Walker’s phone and heard it ringing, found it, and confiscated it. Walker told officers that he did not bring his phone with him in an attempt to hinder the investigation.
Walker has been booked into the Utah County Jail and his bail is set at $10,000.
