Market Lower in Early Trading

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices were lower in early Wall Street trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 31 points. On the New York Stock Exchange, losers held a five-to-four advantage over gainers.

The Nasdaq Composite Index had lost 43 points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index was down six points.

Profit warnings were weighing on Wall Street Wednesday morning, after Sun Microsystems and RadioShack both issued downcast outlooks.

Investors will also get to react to news that Lucent and Alcatel have broken off their merger talks.

In other corporate news, Tyco is buying C.R. Bard while Medtronic is buying MiniMed and an affiliate.

The calendar was clear of any economic releases Wednesday.
