U.S. Psychologist, Colombian Industrialist Kidnapped, Police Say

January 29, 1989

MEDELLIN, Colombia (AP) _ A heavily armed group has kidnapped an American psychologist and Colombian industrialist in this city, police said Saturday.

Michael Ray, 36, of Philadelphia, and Norman Echavarria, who manufactures construction materials, were driving in a car Friday when they were stopped by the group driving in several vehicles, police said.

Police believe Ray’s abduction was accidental because apparently the group’s objective was to obtain a ransom for Echavarria.

However, the businessman’s family has not said if the kidnappers told them of any demands.

Ray arrived Jan. 17 in Medellin, Colombia’s second-largest city, and was to return to Philadelphia on Monday after visiting Echavarria.
