Wheelersburg softball, Rock Hill baseball win state championships
The Rock Hill Senior League baseball team and Wheelersburg 12-under softball squad each won state championships Monday.
Rock Hill came from the losers’ bracket to defeat East Holmes to claim the state title. The Redmen, managed by Carl Blankenship, lost to East Holmes 5-0 earlier in the tournament, but came back to defeat Mason 10-3 to earn a chance at a championship.
Wheelersburg beat Canfield 3-0 Monday to claim the 12-under state softball crown. The Pirates outscored their foes 10-0 in three games and gave up just four hits. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead when Rileigh Lane led off the game with a single, advanced to third on a double by Sydney Salyers, then scored on a wild pitch. Lane scored again in the third when she singled, moved to second on a base hit by Sydney Skiver and crossed the plate on an error to make it 2-0. Wheelersburg’s final run came when Haley Myers singled in Emma Smith.
AndiJo Howard took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and was the winning pitcher.
