“BLACK PANTHER” WINS SAG AWARD FOR TOP MOVIE CAST

NEW YORK (AP) — Wakanda took another step toward being forever remembered this awards season. The Ryan Coogler superhero movie has picked up a key award, winning for top movie cast at the Screen Actors Guild awards last night. The win is the biggest for “Black Panther” so far — and raises its hopes for an even bigger night next month at the Academy Awards. The rise of Black Panther at the SAG Awards also means that the two leading Oscar nominees, “Roma” and “The Favourite,” lost the ensemble award. Other movies in the field last night were “BlacKkKlansman,” ″Crazy Rich Asians,” ″Bohemian Rhapsody” and “A Star Is Born.”

CHADWICK BOSEMAN: “BLACK PANTHER” IS SPECIAL

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chadwick Boseman says a question he and other cast members of “Black Panther” were asked while promoting the superhero film — was how much of an impact did they think it would have on the movie industry. Boseman says his answer now is, “To be young gifted and black.” The quote of the old Nina Simone song was a theme for Boseman as he accepted on behalf of the cast led by director Ryan Coogler. Boseman said the cast knew what it was like “to be told there isn’t a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on” and “what’s like to be beneath and not above.” Boseman said the cast knew it could “create a world that exemplified a world we wanted to see.” The win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for best ensemble puts “Black Panther” in a strong position for best picture at the Oscars. Actors make up the largest percentage of the academy, so their preferences can have a big effect on the Oscar race. In the last decade, the SAG ensemble winner has gone on to win best picture at the Academy Awards half of the time.

SAG AWARDS - ACTING CATEGORIES

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Glenn Close and Rami Malek have put together back-to-back victories as the Oscars near. Close put herself in position to pull off her first-ever Oscar win by capturing the SAG Award for her performance in “The Wife” — after winning in the same category at the Golden Globes. In her acceptance speech, she spoke about the power of movies in a day where many people watch on smaller screens like TV, smartphones and tablets. She says one of the most powerful things for humans “are two eyes looking into two eyes.” Malek won for his portrayal of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Malek dedicated his award to Mercury — just as he did when he won the Golden Globes earlier this month.

She also joked that her husband “would have been in major trouble’” if he hadn’t given her the part. Best supporting actor in a film went to Mahershala Ali who won for “Green Book.” Two years ago, he won for “Moonlight.” Meanwhile. the Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won the first three awards of the night, sweeping the TV comedy category. It won best ensemble in a comedy, as well as individual honors for Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub. Other TV winners were “This is Us” for best TV drama ensemble — and actors Sandra Oh for “Killing Eve,” Darren Criss for “Assassination of Gianni Versace”, Jason Bateman for “Ozark” — and Patricia Arquette for “Escape at Dannemora”.

BOX OFFICE

NEW YORK (AP) — No change at the top on the current box office list. For the second straight weekend, “Glass” is the top movie. M. Night Shyamalan’s movie held on to first place in what was a quiet weekend in movie theaters. That kind of quiet wasn’t what Matthew McConaughey was hoping for — as he posted one of the worst movie debuts of his career. His movie “Serenity” flopped — opening eighth with under $5 million in ticket sales. Meanwhile, remaining second is Kevin Hart’s “The Upside.” And those Oscar-nominated movies still in theaters got only modest bounces.

“RENT” ACTOR INJURED IN REHEARSAL, TAPED SCENES SHOWN

NEW YORK (AP) — The show went on for “Rent” last night, to be sure. But it wasn’t as live as it was supposed to be. The reason: an injury to one of the stars of the musical. Brennin Hunt, who plays the role of rock star Roger Davis, broke his right foot during rehearsal Saturday. And because Hunt couldn’t go last night, the Fox broadcast ended up using the pre-taped show, switching to live action only for the finale. Hunt played the part in “Rent” originated by Adam Pascal. Meanwhile, “Rent” fans got to see some of the stars of the original in cameos, including Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp and Taye Diggs.

“AMERICA’S MOST WANTED” FUGITIVE ARRESTED AFTER STANDOFF IN FLORIDA

PALM COAST, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Virginia fugitive who was featured on “America’s Most Wanted” two decades ago has been arrested. The sheriff’s office in Flagler County says 46-year-old Michael Eugene Moore was taken into custody after a three-hour standoff with deputies in Florida. Moore was on “America’s Most Wanted” after being accused of repeatedly stabbing his wife and abducting their 5-year-old daughter in March, 1966. The girl was found in Miami weeks later — but Moore remained on the lam until now.

TOM BROKAW APOLOGY

NEW YORK (AP) — NBC’s Tom Brokaw says he feels terrible that he offended some Hispanics with comments he made on “Meet the Press” yesterday. The former “NBC Nightly News” anchor took part in a discussion about President Trump’s proposed border wall — and the fear many Republicans have that Hispanics will all become Democrats. Brokaw suggested Hispanics should work harder at assimilating into American life. He also said many immigration opponents say, when pressed, that they don’t want “brown grandbabies.” Julio Ricardo Varela, a journalist who founded the Latino Rebels website, said on Twitter that Brokaw’s comments were factually incorrect and xenophobic.
