Prescribed burn being conducted in Hitchcock Woods today

January 17, 2019

The Hitchcock Woods Foundation prescribed fire management team is conducting a hazard reduction prescribed burn today on the western side of Hitchcock Woods.

The plan is to burn at least 30 acres or possibly up to 40 acres today, according to an email sent by Woods Superintendent Bennett Tucker to the Aiken Standard.

The prescribed burn will take place in management unit W12, which is centrally located on the western side of Hitchcock Woods.

This unit was last treated with prescribed fire in 2016, so this will be more or less a maintenance burn.

Because of wind conditions, the smoke will be traveling to the northeast towards Dibble Road and Highland Park Avenue.

The prescribed burn is scheduled to begin around 10:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. and should be finished before 3:30 p.m.

Smoke will be visible from Richland Avenue West near the Walmart Supercenter and University Parkway.
