Bruno’s CEO Demme Stepping Down Amid
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Jim Demme is quitting as chief executive of Bruno’s Supermarkets Inc., as the Birmingham-based company begins to mesh some of its operations with the larger Bi-Lo chain of Mauldin, S.C.
The consolidation follows the sale of Bruno’s to Ahold, a Dutch grocery corporation, in 2001.
Dean Cohagan, the leader of Bi-Lo, will now also serve as president and CEO of Bruno’s and head the restructured organizations.
The two chains will reorganize some business and administrative functions, which Ahold said would result in job cuts, Ahold said.
Demme said 875 of Bruno’s 15,000 employees are in the company’s administrative offices and its distribution center in Birmingham.
The Bruno’s grocery names _ Bruno’s, Food World, FoodMax and Food Fair _ will remain on its 188 stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi and customers shouldn’t notice a difference inside the stores.
