Finnish Team Leader Hurt in Crash

February 13, 1998

HAKUBA, Japan (AP) _ The Finnish ski sports team leader suffered minor injuries after colliding head-on with another car while driving on the wrong side of the road in the Olympics’ ski competition area, police said.

Esa Klinga, 58, suffered a chest contusion and scratches on his face, and will need three weeks of treatment, said a police spokeman who did not want to be identified. Team doctor Antti Eskola, who was riding in the passenger seat, suffered a minor chest bruise, the spokesman said.

Neither needed to be hospitalized after the accident Friday.

The two had been heading for the Olympic cross country skiing venue to check the course, police said. The accident occurred after Klinga made a U-turn to return to his hotel to pick up something he had forgotten.

The driver and passenger in the other car also suffered chest and face injuries but were not hospitalized.
