Massachusetts Senate picks dates to fill 2 vacant seats
BOSTON (AP) — The state Senate is calling special elections to fill the seats of two recently departed lawmakers.
Democratic Senate President Stan Rosenberg and Republican leader Bruce Tarr say primaries would be held in the First Suffolk District and the Plymouth and Norfolk District on April 12, followed by final elections on May 10.
Republican Robert Hedlund left the Senate after being elected mayor of Weymouth in November. The district also includes Cohasset, Duxbury, Hingham, Hull, Marshfield, Norwell and Scituate.
Democrat Anthony Petruccelli of East Boston announced last month he was leaving the Senate to join a Boston lobbying firm. His district also included the North End and Beacon Hill neighborhoods of Boston, along with Winthrop, Revere and portions of Cambridge.
The Senate is expected to formally adopt the election dates later this month.
