LOCAL COLLEGE: Pacers Advance To Tourney Final

Thomas Swartz had 23 points and eight rebounds to lead Marywood University to an 89-84 win over New Rochelle in the first round of the Dutch Burch Tip-Off men’s basketball tournament Friday at Lycoming College.

The Pacers (1-0) will play Lycoming in the championship game today at 3 p.m.

Tone Cockrell had

12 points for the Pacers, who shot 46 percent from the field.

Messiah 86, Clarks Summit 57

At Grantham, Messiah College outscored Clarks Summit, 53-27, in the first half to roll to a win in the first round of the TownePlace Suites Tip-Off Tournament.

The Falcons held Clarks Summit (0-1) to 33 percent shooting in the first half and hit 7 of 16 3-pointers before halftime.

Marcus Dixon scored

17 points for the Defenders and Khari Dickson had 11.

Clarks Summit will play Roanoke in the consolation game today at 1 p.m.

Women’s cross country

Alexis Karayanis finished 60th in 31:31 for Penn State Scranton at the USCAA Nationals in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Caitlyn Powell was 61st in 31:33 for Scranton, Abington Heights graduate Leah Byman was 69th in 32:43 and Cheyenne Tussel was 78th in 35:31.

Men’s cross country

Kyle Franceski finished 95th in 33:19 for Penn State Scranton at the USCAA Nationals in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Jack Meyer was 119th in 35:51 for Scranton, Honesdale graduate Matt O’Neill was 132nd in 43:13 and Dunmore graduate Robert Murphy was 134th in 48:50.
