Marshall softball picked eighth in C-USA

HUNTINGTON — Marshall University’s softball team was picked for eighth place and had Aly Harrell named to All-Conference USA preseason team in voting by the head coaches.

Louisiana Tech was tabbed to finish first followed by Florida Atlantic and UAB. Louisiana Tech seniors Morgan Turkoly and Preslee Gallaway were named to repeat as the conference preseason Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year.

Harrell, a sophomore infielder from Gahanna, Ohio, was the 2018 C-USA Freshman of the Year. She led the Thundering Herd with a .350 batting average, 11 home runs and 41 runs batted in.

Marshall’s season opens Feb. 8 at the University of San Diego Tournament.

Track and field

LEXINGTON, Va. — Marshall senior Elena Marchand won the shot put event Saturday at the VMI Keydet Invitational indoor women’s track and field meet.

Marchand was first with a mark of 48-feet, 11.75 inches.

Marshall junior Danere’a White finished fourth in the 400-meter run (57.48 seconds) and sophomore Brandy Elysee placed sixth in the 200-meter run (25.18).

The Thundering Herd 4x400-meter relay team of Christianna Dogan, Brandy Elysee, Safiyyah Mitchell, and Erica Murphy finished in fourth place with a time of 3:52.70.

Herd junior Christianna Dogan finished sixth in the 500-meter run with a school-record time of 1:15.81.

Seniors Hasana Clark and Reneese Batson placed one-two in the weight throw with marks of 62.025 and 57.35 respectively.
