Hurricane Alberto Weakening

August 13, 2000

MIAMI (AP) _ Hurricane Alberto, once a strong Category 3 storm, continued to weaken Sunday as it moved over cooler water in the open ocean.

Alberto’s maximum sustained winds registered 95 mph, down from 115 mph the day before.

``We expect Alberto to continue moving east-northeast, and then it’s expected to slow down,″ said James Franklin, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center.

Alberto was moving at about 18 mph midday Sunday, and its center was about 995 miles west of the Azores islands, west of Portugal. The hurricane’s center was expected to pass north of the Azores in the next few days as a powerful storm system.
