Putin To Visit Japan Next Month

August 24, 2000

MOSCOW (AP) _ Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Japan on Sept. 3-5 before heading for a United Nations summit in New York, the foreign minister said Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov did not give details of Putin’s official visit to Japan.

Putin has sought to improve ties with Tokyo and Russia’s other Asian neighbors since his election in March. He was last in Japan for a summit of the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations in July.

Moscow and Tokyo have not signed a peace treaty formally ending World War II because of a dispute over the Kuril Islands, which the Soviet Union seized from Japan in the waning days of the war and which remain in Russian hands.

Putin is also expected to address the U.N. Millennium Summit in New York, Ivanov told reporters.
