Fire: 2 children dead, mother, attempted rescuer injured

December 15, 2017

JACKSON, Ga. (AP) — Georgia authorities say two toddler boys died and their mother was severely burned in an electrical fire.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Jay Florence says the fire broke out Friday afternoon in Jackson, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta. He says the boys were 2 and 3 years old.

He says the fire apparently started in hallway electrical outlets, and the mother reportedly woke about 2:30 p.m. surrounded by flames.

Glen Allen of the Georgia State Insurance Commissioner’s Office says she’s in critical condition with burns over 30 to 40 percent of her upper body.

He says reports that a fourth person was injured were incorrect.

Florence says the victims’ names are being withheld until next-of-kin can be notified.

Allen says fires have killed 100 people in Georgia this year.

This story has been corrected to show that one person was injured, not two.
