MOSCOW (AP) — Defending steeplechase world champion Yuliya Zaripova and former Olympic 800-meter winner Yury Borzakovsky are among several top Russian athletes who have withdrawn from the world championships in Moscow, citing injuries.

Russia coach Alexei Melnikov says that "the season is over" for Zaripova after she was injured in a fall during training earlier this week. Borzakovsky, the Athens Olympics 800-meter champion, said he decided to skip the event after coming down with flu.

Three-time 20-kilometer race walk world champion Olga Kaniskina and London Olympics 50-kilometer race walk winner Sergei Kirdyapkin also are out. Russia head coach Valentin Maslakov said that there appears to be "something wrong with their health."

Their withdrawals follow those of race walker Valery Borchin and heptathlete Tatiana Chernova, also citing injuries.
