Famous Willies BBQ in Post Falls has been named the best barbecue in Idaho by Food & Wine magazine.
Famous Willies is owned and operated by the husband-and-wife team of Willie and Debbe Spradley, who moved to Idaho from Texas in 2001. He’s in charge of the Texas- and Cajun-style barbecue, and she handles the pies.
Meat is cooked on site, and pies are made from scratch.
Famous Willies is especially known for Cajun-spiced spareribs and sausages as well as buttermilk and pecan pies, carrot cakes and peach cobbler.
Rounding out the menu are crawfish and shrimp etouffee, served Fridays, as well as red beans and rice, Cajun chicken and sausage gumbo, an array of sandwiches (brisket, smoked chicken, Cajun pork shoulder), Frito pie, and combination plates with beans, potato salad and slaw.
Food & Wine’s David Landsel wrote “The Best BBQ in Every State” list. In Washington, it’s Jeff’s Texas Style BBQ in Marysville. In Idaho, it’s Famous Willies. (Its website declares, “We know we are not ‘the best,’ but we are the best we know!”)
Landsel also named at least once runner-up for every state. In Washington, both picks were in Seattle. In Idaho, BBQ4Life in Boise got a shout-out.
Spokane got one, too.
Landsel wrote that Famous Willies BBQ in Post Falls is “just a short hop over the state line from Spokane.”
And he put that in parentheses.
