Gunmen kill 8 at El Salvador graduation party

November 25, 2014

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — Police in El Salvador say eight people are dead after gunmen burst into a graduation party in a western town.

The federal prosecutors’ office said Tuesday the killings occurred around midnight.

Family and friends had gathered to celebrate a girl’s middle-school graduation in the Pacific coast town of Acajutla.

Prosecutor Oscar Torres says gunmen armed with assault rifles and pistols opened fire on between 15 and 20 party-goers. Seven men died at the scene and a woman died later at a hospital. The girl being honored at the party was not injured.

No motive for the attack was immediately established. Authorities say the majority of killings in El Salvador are related to street gangs.
