Door-to-door Girl Scout cookie sales begin in DeKalb County

January 7, 2019

If you know a Girl Scout and you’re already looking for some sweet treats, you might be able to put in your order soon.

Lynda Fillipp, marketing manager for Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, said in-person Girl Scout cookie sales began Friday and will continue through Jan. 27.

“This is when the girls hit the sidewalks and start ringing doorbells, and they go from door to door with their long cookie packet,” Fillipp said.

Online Girl Scout cookie sales began Dec. 17 and will end March 17, Fillipp said. Digital Cookie 5.0 allows girls to take electronic orders for cookies, where customers can order and pay for cookies online. They then have the option to have the cookies shipped directly to them with a shipping fee, have a Girl Scout deliver the cookies to them or donate their cookie order.

The ability to order Girl Scout cookies online still is a newer concept that many Girl Scouts took advantage of last year. Although Fillipp said she did not have official numbers available from the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, she said online sales are becoming more popular.

“We have had an enormous increase in the amount of girls using Digital Cookie this year,” Fillipp said.

There are more than 400 registered Girl Scouts in DeKalb County, including in Genoa, Kingston, Kirkland, Cortland, Malta, Sycamore and DeKalb.

Fillipp said in-person or paper orders are shipped sometime next month. She said booth sales, where Girl Scouts will be selling cookies at tables typically set up in front of local stores, will begin next month, as well.

Fillipp said having Girl Scouts taking it upon themselves to sell cookies on their own gives them the opportunity to enhance their entrepreneurial skills. She said cookie sales also will help the Girl Scouts pay to attend summer camp or pay for other larger-scale travel opportunities.

“The more cookies they sell, the more things they can do and the more adventures they can have,” Fillipp said.

If you don’t know any Girl Scouts but still want to get your hands on a box of Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles, S’mores or Toffee-tastics, email cookies4you@girlscoutsni.org to be connected to a nearby Girl Scout who can take your order.
