Pistons Sign Cardinal, Smith
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) _ The Detroit Pistons signed second-round draft pick Brian Cardinal on Monday.
The Pistons also signed forward Antonio Smith, guards Donald Williams, Rosell Ellis, David Vanterpool, and center Matt Fish.
The team did not disclose contract terms, though they were expected to be near the league minimum.
The Pistons chose Cardinal, a 6-foot-8 forward, with the 44th overall pick of the NBA draft in June. He led Purdue in scoring with 13.9 points per game, and in defensive rebounds (142), steals (65) and free throws made (130) as a fifth-year senior.
Smith, 6-8, was one of the four ``Flintstones″ who grew up in the industrial city of Flint, Mich., and were recruited by Michigan State. He’ll be reunited with former teammate Mateen Cleaves, who led the Spartans to the NCAA title last spring.
Smith played last year with the Grand Rapids Hoops of the Continental Basketball Association, averaging 4.2 points per game on .438 shooting.
Williams played for the Raleigh Cougars of the USBL as well as in several international leagues.
Ellis averaged 10.2 points and 4.6 rebounds with the CBL’s Yakima Sun Kings last year. Vanterpool averaged 13.1 points and 6.6 rebounds last season with Yakima.
Fish last played in the NBA in 1996-97 with the Washington Wizards and Miami Heat.
