10-Year-Old Boy’s Body Found, Killing Linked to That of 6-Year-Old
CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) _ Police on Saturday found the body of a 10-year-old boy missing since November and said his killing was connected with that of another Providence youngster who was sexually assaulted, then beaten to death.
The body of Frankie Barnes of Providence was identified by his mother, Barbara Duru, through his clothing, said Cranston Police Chief Kenneth Mancuso. Mancuso declined to say whether the youngster had been sexually molested but said an autopsy would be conducted later Saturday. He linked the victim with the slaying of another Providence youngster whose body was found last week.
Frankie was reported missing after leaving his home on a bicycle Nov. 4.
The body was found in Tongue Pond about 12:30 p.m. Saturday after police received a tip.
The body of Jason Wolf, 6, missing since Dec. 14, was found Monday at Mashapaug Pond. Officials said he was sexually assaulted before being beaten to death.
Mancuso would not comment on the condition of the body found Saturday or say how long police believed it had been in the pond.
Police were investigating a possible connection between the deaths and a note delivered to Providence police, Mancuso said. The note’s writer reportedly took the blame for the killings.
According to station WJAR, a police source said the note read in part, ″I hope you will kill me, cops, because I don’t know why I killed the children. Keep boys and kids away from me.″
Mancuso declined to comment on details of the note.
