PJ animal trailer 08 01
A new trailer gifted to the City of Pearland Animal Services will not only provide a place for cats and dogs during mobile adoption events, but will also provide lodging and medical care for pets during hurricanes.
“The unit has surgical equipment, 30 kennels for both dogs and cats, storage for equipment and supplies, and it can be run on a generator or electricity,” said Sabrina Lopez, a supervising attendant for the shelter, located at 2002 Old Alvin Road.
The mobile trailer was donated to the shelter by Pearland Pets, a local nonprofit organization. The group raised $80,000 to buy and outfit the trailer at its annual Wags to Riches Gala and Casino Night in June.
Pearland Pets exists to raise money solely for Pearland Animal Services. The group does not foster or house animals.
Lopez said members of the Pearland Pets group contacted the city to determine the shelter’s needs.
“They reached out to (supervisor) Shari Coleman and asked her what was her one dream she would like to come true and it was to have a trailer to do adoptions and to (treat animals) during hurricanes,” said Lopez.
Lopez said Pearland Animal Services personnel are looking forward to taking the animals on the road.
“We hold adoptions every day here at the shelter, but (we want to use the new trailer) to hold as many (mobile) adoptions as we can accommodate,” she said.
Lopez said the shelter works with more than just cats and dogs, they also handle issues with wildlife and livestock.
“We do several things here from rabies control, handling loose animals and investigations (in addition to) cleaning and taking care of than animals here at the shelter.”
