Survey: N.Y. ‘Best Sports City’

August 7, 2001

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ New York is the ``best sports city in North America.″

The Sporting News announced the honor Tuesday in its annual survey, with the New York metropolitan area supplanting St. Louis for the top spot. New York also won in 1999.

The magazine cited the Subway Series in which the Yankees beat the Mets, as well as the New York Giants’ appearance in the Super Bowl and the New Jersey Devils’ advance to the Stanley Cup finals.

``The first Subway Series in 44 years crystalized the enthusiasm of New York fans last fall,″ Sporting News editor John Rawlings said. ``The feeling on the streets with everyone in their Yankees or Mets apparel was a remarkable thing to see.″

The rest of the top 10 markets were: Oakland-San Francisco-San Jose, Los Angeles-Anaheim, Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Baltimore-Washington, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Detroit and Phoenix. St. Louis dropped to 11th.

The rankings are featured in the Aug. 13 issue. The magazine, headquartered in St. Louis, takes into account team success, fan support and a city’s sports culture.
