Think tank remembering the late Democratic US Sen. Pell

November 22, 2018

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A think tank is remembering the late Democratic U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell’s legacy.

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy in Newport wrote about Pell because Thursday is the centennial of his birth.

Pell was born Nov. 22, 1918, in New York City. He represented Rhode Island in the Senate for 36 years and was the force behind a grant program that has helped many Americans attend college.

He also helped establish the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities.

Pell died in 2009 after battling Parkinson’s disease. He was 90.

The center says Pell’s legacy is found in “every student who went to college because of Pell Grants; in every artist and scholar whose work deepens our understanding of humanity thanks to a federal grant.”
