Minister Killed, Wife Critically Injured in Robbery Attempt
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ A 73-year-old minister was fatally beaten and stabbed with scissors after he surprised a burglar in the church Tuesday, and his wife was severely beaten but survived, police said.
The body of the Rev. Wayne Carlson and his injured wife, Virginia, were discovered by a church worker, said Sandra King, spokeswoman for the Pompano Beach Police Department. Both had been bound and gagged.
Police later charged Michael Patrick Wilson, 27, of Pompano Beach, with first-degree murder, attempted murder, two counts of armed robbery and two counts of false imprisonment, Ms. King said. She said Wilson admitted attacking the couple, saying he needed money to buy crack.
Mrs. Carlson, 70, was in critical but stable condition late Tuesday at Humana Hospital-Cypress, said a nursing supervisor who declined to give her name.
