Louisiana mother gets jail time for children missing school
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A Louisiana prosecutor says a woman whose children missed almost two years of school has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Caddo Parish District Attorney James Stewart tells KTBS-TV that 35-year-old Fathimah Slack pleaded guilty to improper supervision. She appeared in parish juvenile court Thursday.
Stewart says Slack admitted that she failed to send her two children, ages 13 and 14, to school for more than a year and a half. The DA says the children were not home-schooled.
Authorities say Slack was arrested last summer when Shreveport police and parish sheriff’s deputies were executing warrants for parents who failed to appear in court for truancy matters.
It is unclear if Slack has a lawyer who could comment for her.
