New Italian FA chief expects end to chaos in lower divisions
ROME (AP) — New Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina says it's "time to play" for idle Serie C clubs still holding out hope of promotion to Serie B.
Presiding over his first board meeting since being elected last week, Gravina signaled that he plans to support previous rulings limiting Serie B to 19 clubs this season.
The move from 22 to 19 teams was made following the bankruptcies of Avellino, Bari and Cesena.
Former Italy international Antonio Cassano retires
GENOA, Italy (AP) — Former Italy international Antonio Cassano has announced his retirement after training for less than a week with Virtus Entella.
Cassano says in a statement: "The day has come where you decide that it's really over. I have other priorities now."
Entella, based near Cassano's current home in Genoa, announced a week ago that Cassano would begin training with the club "without any contractual obligation."

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican says Pope Francis is planning to invite heads of churches and Christian communities from the Middle East to join him in a day of reflection and prayer in the southeastern Italian port city of Bari on July 7.
The announcement on Wednesday said Francis has called for this "ecumenical encounter for peace" in view of the "dramatic situation" facing many Christians in the Middle East.
Archaeologists may have discovered St. Nick’s bones
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish archaeologists believe they may have discovered the remains of St. Nicholas — from whom the legend of Santa Claus emerged — beneath a church at his birthplace in southern Turkey.
St. Nicholas was born and served as a bishop of what is now the Turkish Mediterranean town of Demre, near Antalya, in the 4th century. He was buried in the area formerly known as Myra, but his bones were believed to have been stolen and taken to the southern Italian town of Bari.

Juventus defender Bonucci extends contract through 2021
TURIN, Italy (AP) — Looking to become "even more of a legend" at Juventus, Leonardo Bonucci extended his contract with the Italian club on Monday until 2021.
The Italy defender joined Juventus from Bari in 2010 and has made 291 appearances — more than any other outfield player at Juventus in the past six years.
"I am happy and proud of this decision to continue this glorious and ever more victorious journey until 2021," Bonucci said.

Francis sent a telegram to the archbishop of Bari, Monsignor Fracnesco Cacucci, saying he shared in the pain of so many families. He said he was mourning those who died and praying for the injured to recover quickly.
