BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — A second person who died from injuries sustained in an avalanche at a northern New Mexico ski resort is a Minnesota native.
The deceased skier has been identified by family as 22-year-old Corey Borg-Massanari, who was raised in Brainerd. Borg-Massanari moved to Vail, Colorado from Minnesota to attend Colorado Mountain College. He worked for an outdoor equipment company and as a zipline tour guide in the summer.

Minnesota car track owner dies in Florida swim accident
BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — The owner of Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota has died in a swimming accident off the Florida coast. Jed Copham was 46.
Raceway officials say Copham had been swimming from his parents' boat on Sunday near Fort Myers when he went missing. According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, authorities recovered his body near a boat ramp Monday morning.
Man fatally struck walking across central Minnesota highway
BECKER, Minn. (AP) — The State Patrol says a man is dead after he was struck by a car while walking across a highway in central Minnesota.
Authorities say 66-year-old Francis Pittman of Big Lake was crossing Highway 10 in Becker when he was struck and killed Friday night.
The 23-year-old Brainerd woman who was driving the Honda Accord that struck Pittman was not seriously hurt.
Record-setting heat Sunday in Minnesota
BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — Late summer temperatures in northern and north central Minnesota rose to record-setting levels during the weekend.
The mercury climbed to 89 degrees Sunday in Brainerd, beating a record of 82 set in 2015.
The National Weather Service says the average high for Brainerd this time of year is 69.
60-year-old Billy Torrence races to first NHRA Top Fuel win
BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — Billy Torrence raced to his first career Top Fuel victory Sunday at age 60, winning the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
Torrence, the father of Top Fuel points leader Steve Torrence, beat three-time season champion Antron Brown on a holeshot in the final round, finishing in 3.756 seconds at 329.99 mph. Torrence won in his 27th start in the division.
Robert Hight tops NHRA Funny Car qualifying at Brainerd
BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — Robert Hight raced to his second No. 1 qualifying position of the season and the 59th overall Saturday in the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
Hight had a 3.959-second run at 324.67 mph in the third Funny Car qualifying session. The Chevrolet driver is the defending Funny Car season champion.
Antron Brown leads NHRA Top Fuel qualifying at Brainerd
BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — Antron Brown led Top Fuel qualifying Friday in the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
Coming off his first victory of the season two weeks ago outside Seattle, Brown had a 3.789-second run at 325.45 mph. He has 49th career No. 1 qualifiers.

Twenty-three-year-old Jeffrey Thomas is charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault. A paternity test has not been completed, but Thomas says he's not the father.

Jeffrey Ryan Thomas, 23, was charged in Crow Wing County District Court with first-degree premeditated attempted murder, second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault. According to the criminal complaint, Thomas allegedly poisoned the infant girl after his wife became upset that he apparently fathered the child with another woman.

Ivan Lyogky of Hartville, Ohio, and his sons Stephan and Rostik were tested separately by a licensed polygraph examiner and no deception regarding the contest was detected, the Jaycees said in a news release.

Officials with Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza say they're investigating whether three men from Ohio legitimately caught the fish when they say they did, the Star Tribune reported.

The Ohio man who won third place at the recent Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza told the Star Tribune Monday that he, together with his son and another relative who also won prizes at the contest, including a new pickup truck, caught their fish legitimately.
Ivan Lyogky, 52, of Hartville, Ohio, also said he and his family are considering legal action against the Brainerd Jaycees.

Nearly a year out from next years election for Minnesota governor, a straw poll of Republican Party activists on Saturday provided a first indication of which GOP candidate could end up on the ballot.
More than 350 attendees of the Republican Party of Minnesotas State Central Committee meeting in Brainerd listened to speeches from seven candidates before casting their ballots. Rep. Matt Dean, R-Dellwood, came in first with just over 30 percent of the vote.
