Just like that, though, the Aztecs finally found their rhythm and the Matadors started playing like the young team they are.

With McDaniels back, expectations high again for Aztecs
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Expectations are high once again at San Diego State, thanks to a remarkable run to the NCAA Tournament and Jalen McDaniels' decision to return for his redshirt sophomore season.
Although the Aztecs are the decided second choice behind No. 7 Nevada to win the Mountain West Conference regular-season title, they showed last year they can play well when they're focused.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — John Beilein believes it's time for Steve Fisher to assume his rightful place in Michigan lore.
It was Fisher who led the Wolverines to the 1989 national championship, then brought together the Fab Five for two more runs to the title game before becoming persona non grata around the school's Ann Arbor campus following a scandal that led to his firing more than two decades ago.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Four weeks ago, when San Diego State was 13-10 and in eighth place in the Mountain West Conference, even a berth in the NIT seemed farfetched in the Aztecs' first season under coach Brian Dutcher.
There were rumblings that maybe Dutcher hadn't been the right guy to replace Steve Fisher, even though the longtime loyal lieutenant had been the "head coach in waiting" since 2011.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Going to the NCAA Tournament used to be almost a birthright at San Diego State, starting with Kawhi Leonard's freshman season.
SDSU made it to six straight NCAA tourneys, including its first two Sweet 16 appearances.
Then it stopped.
Two years removed from their last go-round with March Madness, the Aztecs need to win the Mountain West Conference tournament this week in order to secure a bid in Brian Dutcher's first year as coach.

Watson leads San Diego State to 66-57 victory over Toreros
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego State has beaten San Diego 11 times in the last 12 seasons, so the Aztecs don't really view the crosstown series as a rivalry.

SDSU gets easy win in Dutcher’s first game as head coach
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brian Dutcher was pretty low-key after his first game — and win — as a head coach.
Maybe because it was such an easy win, 91-52 against outmanned San Diego Christian, an NAIA team that doesn't have its own gym.
Or maybe it was because he's simply seen a lot of basketball, mostly spent at Steve Fisher's side.
Dutcher takes over SDSU program he helped Fisher build
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brian Dutcher finally gets to move over one seat on San Diego State's bench.
He spent 18 years as assistant to Aztecs basketball coach Steve Fisher, the last six with the "head coach in waiting" designation. He's waiting no longer after Fisher retired in April.
There was a time when Dutcher could have moved on to another program, but the "head coach in waiting" showed he was serious about eventually succeeding Fisher, whom he'd been with since 1989 at Michigan.
