New Seattle US attorney to be sworn in Thursday
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle U.S. Attorney Annette Hayes says she is stepping down Thursday to make way for her successor, Brian Moran.
Hayes is a 21-year veteran of the U.S. attorney's office. She took over Western Washington's top federal prosecutor in October 2014, when Jenny Durkan resigned. Durkan is now Seattle's mayor.
Senate confirms Brian Moran as new Seattle US attorney
SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. Senate has confirmed Brian Moran, a former leader in the Washington state attorney general's office, to be the top federal prosecutor in western Washington state.
Moran, 59, will replace U.S. Attorney Annette Hayes.
"I'm truly humbled and honored," he said in a phone interview. "I look forward to going back to public service in an office whose sole mission is to serve the citizens of the Western District."
Northam forms advisory commission on opioids
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has asked a group of experts to advise him on how to fight the state's opioid epidemic.
Northam signed an executive order Friday establishing an advisory commission on opioids and addiction.
The governor, who is a pediatric neurologist, said the commission will review the state's current approach at curbing opioid abuse and offer feedback on ways to improve.

Police watching for drunken drivers over Labor Day weekend
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia law enforcement officials will be on the lookout for drunken drivers this holiday weekend.
Officials say law enforcement members in the state will conduct about 140 sobriety checkpoints over Labor Day weekend. They will also be performing 530 saturation patrols, which are concentrated enforcement efforts aimed at cracking down on impaired driving.
