OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco Giants acquired veteran catcher Erik Kratz from the Brewers on Sunday, sending minor league infielder C.J. Hinojosa to Milwaukee.
Giants’ Posey catching more in spring than expected
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — On Saturday, San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey played in his fifth spring training game and made his fourth start behind the plate.
Buster Posey likely won’t catch in early spring games
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Buster Posey most likely will not catch in any spring training games until early March, San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday.
Bumgarner, Posey would love to see Harper join Giants
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey would love to see Bryce Harper join them in the San Francisco Giants clubhouse.
"I think it'd be a huge addition for us," Bumgarner said Tuesday as the Giants opened spring training. "He's obviously a superstar in the game, a young player. I think everybody in here would be pretty damn excited to have him."
Posey is healthy and hopeful of handling full catching load
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — One day in early November, Buster Posey felt his body respond more normally again as he rehabilitated from season-ending hip surgery. Working out his lower half with a 15-pound dumbbell in his left hand he leaned forward for a one-legged Russian Dead Lift. Posey felt the muscles in his right buttocks being used exactly the way they should.
Catcher Stephen Vogt agrees to minor league deal with Giants
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stephen Vogt is ready to do whatever he can to take pressure off Buster Posey as both catchers work to bounce back from surgeries that cut their 2018 seasons short.
Vogt is returning to the Bay Area after agreeing to a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Giants go younger so far under new executive Farhan Zaidi
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have had a quiet offseason, aside of course from acquiring new president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi from the rival and six-time defending division champion Dodgers and challenging him with getting this franchise back into contention.
Or, as Zaidi emphasized, competing night in and night out.
Posey could be limited early, should return to 100 percent
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Buster Posey's recovery from right hip surgery might limit how much the San Francisco All-Star catches during spring training and at the start of the season.
Posey had surgery in late August to repair a torn labrum in the hip and remove an impingement.
Giants finish 5-21 September for another losing season
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The way the last two seasons have gone for the San Francisco Giants, those three World Series titles in 2010, '12 and '14 seem so long ago for manager Bruce Bochy's club.
The Giants finished 73-89 following a season during which the biggest names — Madison Bumgarner, Buster Posey, Johnny Cueto, Brandon Belt — were all injured at some point. They traded Andrew McCutchen to the Yankees in late August amid all the disabled list stints.
Giants catcher Posey to have season-ending hip surgery
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey will undergo hip surgery Monday in Colorado, ending what has been a painful and frustrating year for the six-time All-Star.
Posey revealed the decision to have the season-ending surgery following Friday night's loss to the Texas Rangers. Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed it prior to Saturday's game.
Giants catcher Posey considering season-ending hip surgery
NEW YORK (AP) — San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey's season might soon be coming to an end.
The six-time All-Star said Tuesday night that he's considering surgery to fix a hip problem that's been hobbling him all year.
"I think when you're dealing with an injury, it can be a level of frustration," Posey said. "I'm so hesitant just because ... I hate reading stuff where I feel like people are talking and there's any sort of excuse, no matter what it is."
Giants honor Bonds before 4-0 loss to Pirates
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Trevor Williams and two relievers combined on a six-hitter, and the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the San Francisco Giants 4-0 on Saturday night.
Josh Bell homered for the second time in three days. Elias Diaz added two hits for the Pirates after coming in as an injury replacement for Francisco Cervelli.
Posey, McCutchen lead Giants past Pirates 13-10
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants finally got their offense going, and they needed it to survive another shaky performance from their bullpen.
Buster Posey got four hits, Andrew McCutchen homered against his former team and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-10 on Friday night.
"They just started swinging with I think more authority," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
The Giants had lost three in a row and Pittsburgh had won three straight.
Giants’ Posey back in lineup Sunday
PHOENIX (AP) — San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey returned to the lineup Sunday in the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Posey is batting second and playing first base for the Giants. He missed Saturday's game while in concussion protocol after being hit in the mask with a foul ball during Friday's game.
Posey got two at-bats before leaving the game in the top of the third inning.
Posey leaves game with concussion symptoms
PHOENIX (AP) — San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey left Friday night's game after taking a foul tip off his mask in the bottom of the second. The Giants later announced that Posey was taken out for concussion symptoms.
Posey, who had two hits in the game, singled in the third inning and upon reaching first base, was tended to by a trainer and first base coach Jose Alguacil. Posey took off his helmet and walked to the dugout.
Posey’s 4 hits help Giants end skid against Brewers
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pablo Sandoval had no problem legging out his first triple in more than three years. Diving into home plate moments later was another matter and could land the Giants infielder on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain.
Right fielder Andrew McCutchen's bruised left foot may also be an issue — yet another blow for a team already beset by injuries much of the season.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Buster Posey would prefer not to discuss his inflamed right hip, and notes that if it wasn't the reason he has to skip the All-Star Game it might still be a secret that he needs an injection once the first half wraps up this weekend.
It has affected him hitting and behind the plate.
That's what made Posey's game-ending hit all the more impressive.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Giants catcher Buster Posey will miss the All-Star Game because of a lingering right hip issue that needs an injection to calm the inflammation.
The hip has bothered him both hitting and catching off and on all season, so Posey is hopeful the time off will allow him to heal.
NEW YORK (AP) — Miami pitcher Dan Straily has been suspended for five games for intentionally throwing a pitch at San Francisco's Buster Posey while warnings were in place for both teams.
Major League Baseball also suspended Marlins manager Don Mattingly for one game Thursday and fined Straily and Mattingly undisclosed amounts.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Buster Posey certainly thought he got hit by a pitch in retaliation.
Manager Bruce Bochy is still disappointed the Marlins plunked Evan Longoria last week and the third baseman is now recovering from surgery on his left hand.
Miami's Don Mattingly insists nobody on either side was intentionally hit and became upset that the umpires warned both teams too quickly.
MIAMI (AP) — Brian Anderson stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied, one out and the bases loaded.
The Marlins' rookie took the situation in stride like a veteran.
Anderson hit a game-ending sacrifice fly to lift the Miami Marlins over the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Wednesday night.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals reliever Brandon Kintzler left Saturday's game against the San Francisco Giants in the eighth inning with an apparent injury.
Kintzler faced three batters after entering with one out in the eighth, hitting Gorkys Hernandez with a pitch before getting Alen Hanson to fly out. Buster Posey then doubled to right, and Washington manager Dave Martinez and a team athletic trainer quickly went to the mound.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Madison Bumgarner will be coming back to a team in the thick of the NL West race.
Andrew McCutchen and Brandon Crawford opened a seven-run fourth inning with back-to-back home runs, and the San Francisco Giants got back to .500 on the season by beating the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks 10-3 on Monday night.
CHICAGO (AP) — There isn't much Kyle Hendricks thinks he needs to change. And it's hard to argue when he's in command like this.
Hendricks limited San Francisco to one run and two hits over seven innings, Ben Zobrist lined a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh and the Chicago Cubs beat the Giants 6-2 on Friday.
Hendricks (4-3) struck out seven and walked two, helping Cubs open the series on a winning note after a two-game sweep by Cleveland at Wrigley Field.
ATLANTA (AP) — Bruce Bochy kept the faith when San Francisco's hitters struggled in the first three weeks of the season.
The Giants suddenly are showing that their manager had good reason to remain confident.
Buster Posey and Andrew McCutchen each had three of San Francisco's 18 hits and the hot-hitting Giants rolled over Brandon McCarthy and the Atlanta Braves 11-2 on Saturday night.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Mac Williamson remade his swing during the offseason to become a more consistent power hitter. He added a leg kick, lowered his hands, found better balance all in an effort to keep the bat in the zone longer and give himself more room for error.
Whatever he did, it's working. He crushed a ball into the wind.
Belt homers as Giants beat Diamondbacks 4-3
PHOENIX (AP) — Brandon Belt's 100th career homer was one timely shot for San Francisco.
Belt hit a two-run drive with two out in the 10th inning, and the Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 on Wednesday night to stop a four-game slide.
Andrew McCutchen opened the 10th with a single against Brad Boxberger. Buster Posey then struck out swinging and Evan Longoria flied to center before Belt hit a towering drive into the seats in right for his second homer this season.
PHOENIX (AP) — Brandon Belt hit a checked-swing infield single with two outs in the eighth inning to end a no-hit bid by Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin.
The left-handed Belt pulled up on a pitch but still made contact for a slow roller to the left side. The infield was shifted toward first base, and shortstop Nick Ahmed dashed to get the ball and throw across his body to first. Belt beat the throw on a close play.
Later spring training starts means some players are fresher
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Buster Posey gets going at Scottsdale Stadium around 7 a.m. most days of spring training, a couple of hours before he's due to be there.
It gives him time for a quick bite to eat, to lift weights or do some extra baseball work then have a real breakfast ahead of the Giants' formal workout.
Parker’s 2-run double in 7th sends Giants past Brewers
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers would have much preferred to leave for an important road series against baseball's best Los Angeles Dodgers with momentum from a series win.
Instead, they dropped a pair of two-run defeats to the lowly San Francisco Giants.
Jarrett Parker hit a go-ahead two-run double on a checked swing in the seventh, Buster Posey hit a sacrifice fly, and San Francisco beat the contending Brewers 4-2 on Wednesday.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Buster Posey twice watched plays he was part of go to replay, first on a three-run homer that held up and then a stolen base. A rare stolen base for San Francisco's catcher, who now has five to move within one of his career high set last season.
He matched teammate Denard Span's five stolen bases.
"I told Span I'm tied with him now so he needs to step it up," Posey said.
Hundley’s single lifts Giants past Padres 5-4 in 12
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — With All-Star catcher Buster Posey getting a break after logging nearly five hours behind the plate a day earlier, San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy knew he would have to lean heavily on Nick Hundley.
With one swing in the 12th inning, Hundley provided the Giants with far more than they expected from the veteran backup.
Hundley singled in Kelby Tomlinson with two outs in the 12th, lifting San Francisco to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday.
